Principles of Data Management - Introduction

Writer's picture: Sean TameSean Tame

All day, every day, we create data. How valuable that data becomes, is a product of many things, but by far and away the most important factor, is your data's ability to become insightful. Without insights, your data is literally just a collection of 1's and 0's forever banished to a cloud storage service.

In this series, I will outline several principles to guide your organisation on how to better collect, store and use the data you create to ensure you maximise its value. Specifically we will cover the following topics.

  • Time and Place. The when and where of good data entry.

  • Supercharge your Data. Not only reduce double handling of input, but also multiply the value of the output.

  • The power of metadata. Using the data about data to drive your outputs

  • Access versus Distribution. How to share your data efficiently with end users.

  • Tail wagging Dog of data entry. Recognising when to optimise the output rather than amend the input

  • Data Responsibility. Best Practises to help you protect you and your customers
